As across-the-board spending cuts initiated by the sequestration begin to affect government sectors, Defense Department cuts will disproportionately affect states with large military-related industries. These cuts will hit Virginia especially hard; the Department of Defense contributed nearly 20% of Virginia jobs in FY 2008, larger than any private industry sector.
