Hours-long poll lines in several states significantly depressed voter turnout, with many would-be voters leaving because lines were taking too long. Interestingly, the longest lines were experienced in cities where Democrats outnumber Republicans: 18% of Democrats waited 30+ minutes to vote, compared to 11% of Independents, and 9% of Republicans. Also surprising, blacks and Hispanics waited nearly twice as long as whites on average. The 4 states with the shortest wait times are also among the most white states; conversely, 4-of-the-top-6 smallest-white-population states had the longest lines.
