Around the globe, males commit suicide in rates three and four that of females. In Asia and Pacific-island countries the suicide rates are increasing substantially each year. Suicide rates are highest among the retired, unemployed, impoverished, homeless, and other people who live alone or are socio-economically disadvantaged.
