In 2011, U.S. metropolitan areas with populations less than 25,000 had the highest violent crime rates, with an average of 329.4 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants. The smallest nonmetropolitan counties (less than 10,000 people) also had the highest violent crime rates among nonmetropolitan counties, with 202.6 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants.
