military spending
billion U.S. dollars
Though defense spending in the US fell by 7.8% in 2013, it still amounted for 37% of the share's world military expenditure, and was higher than the sum of budgets in the next top 8 countries ($620B). Spending also decreased in France, UK, Italy, Brazil, Australia and Canada, while it increased in China (7.4%) and Russia (4.8%).
I suppose when only looking at the dollar amount, the military expenditure by the US seems colossal. However, if looked from a percent of GDP perspective, the US ranks 14th globally:
#1 Oman = 11.5% of GDP
#2 Saudi Arabia = 9.0% of GDP
#14 USA = 3.8% of GDP

I think it would also be interesting to look at percent of GDP spent on health care, education, etc in the top 13 countries that exceed the US in military spending as a percent of GDP.
