Americans increasingly want the military to be concentrating on the defense of the country before the maintenance of world stability according to a recent Rasmussen poll. This outcome could be due to the many national security threat which have manifested since 2011 such as ISIS and other threats of terror. America is often tasked with stabilizing the balance of power, but where would the world be if America didn't protect itself first? Just some food for thought.
Doesn't the line get blurred between domestic and international security when the legend says "America's interests?" Shouldn't our interests include both defending our country and maintaining worldwide stability?
Great point. I totally agree. The two should be working toward the same goals. I think the poll was trying to differentiate what Americans think is most important. Which, in and of itself is problematic and you have pointed out.
We must be wary when issues of regional stability actually require military intervention, as foreign military presence may often cause all sorts of instability. The rise of groups like the Islamic State and the Nusra Front are testament to the destabilizing effect US involvement had on Iraq and Syria.
