70% of Americans feel it is essential that the federal budget deficit be reduced-- with 73% believing this should be done mostly or entirely through spending cuts. Paradoxically, nearly the same percentage oppose decreasing spending for any federal program with significant spending-- including entitlements, defense, education, and healthcare. The only program without majority support to maintain/increase spending was foreign aid.
