In 2013, the major entitlement programs—Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other health care—consumed 49% of all federal spending. By comparison, national defense comprised only 18% of federal spending, and its share of the total has been declining in recent years.

The heritage foundation is distrustful when it comes to its study's and findings being that it was created and funded by the koch brothers to spread disinformation.

I would have thought defense spending accounted for a higher percentage. As far as distrust of the heritage foundation goes...most organizations if this sort seem to receive partisan funding. I believe that is why it is important to look at and consolidate data coming from opposing partisan groups.
