In 2001, in order to protect the last remaining expanses of untouched wild-land, the Roadless Area Conservation Rule was issued. This protects forests from logging, road construction, and mining. However, under the Bush Administration, several exemptions were made to the rule allowing the construction of roads. While 95% of people have spoken positively about the rule, more action is necessary.
