While presidents in the middle of the 20th Century enjoyed relatively high approval ratings from voters in the opposing party (eg. Democratic voters' opinion of a Republican president), since Nixon, there has been a increasing trend of opposition party disapproval. This is particularly evinced in the years since the Clinton Administration, marked by increased polarization and resulting political gridlock.
