The government shutdown of last month cost the US over $1 billion each week, greatly surpassing the previous record of costliest shutdown by nearly a billion dollars. The majority of the expense will be paying approximately 800,000 furloughed federal workers for time spent idle. Furthermore, the associated damage-- the undermining of consumer, business, and investor confidence-- may be far costlier.
