It’s a well-known irony that states that tend to vote Republican—the party that constantly raves about the “makers” and trolls the “takers”—generally take in more tax money than they pay out. Bloomberg recently compiled USDA data and found that, “70 percent of counties with the fastest growth in food-stamp aid ... voted for the Republican presidential candidate in 2008.”

Republicans: "Vote for us! We're going to take away your food!"
Stupid Republican Voters: "Yes, we will vote for you! You're our heroes!"

The reason in a nutshell is religion. The republicans have convinced deep South and Midwest voters that the left is the party of Satan and that the hate God. The incredible part is that they quote bible verses that put down their own neighbors as lazy and not worthy of eating. Insanity, to put it mildly.

The Republicans have done an excellent job of convincing the food stamp recipients that the reason for low wages and poverty is that the corporations are being too heavily taxed and can't hire them. They never say that the educational standards in these very areas are substandard, the work pool is poorly trained and prepared for other than low wage jobs. In addition, the worst of it is that somehow these poor people have asked to be poor and are not giving enough to the church.

GOP quote Bible all the time but go out and act in reverse of message. The Bible says to do for the poor but they do everything to make poor worst off. Reason is fear. Fear that those poor will take jobs and food from them esp nonwhite.. That southern fear has been kept alive by southern whites for generations and the GOP uses it to pander to party members-rallying point. Teaparty uses this also as their beliefs are only for white America no one else should be allowed to have American dream. Ofcourse they have a few "others" to point out to say this is not true.
