In September of 2014, Princeton released a groundbreaking study that attempted to quantify the influence of specific groups on American politics. By examining the will of average citizens, economic elites and special interest groups in 1,779 different cases, the researchers compared each group's policy preferences with the likelihood of a policy change taking place. Unfortunately, the study found that, all else equal, the preferences of average Americans have little to no effect on their government's policy outcomes.
