The political gridlock plaguing recent Congresses reflects the growing polarization of the two major political parties, as both become smaller and more ideologically homogenous. Compared with basic demographic divisions-- such as race, gender, religion, and class--the partisan divide has exponentially increased in the last two decades, becoming the overwhelmingly most divisive factor of the American public.
