When Obama won landslide victories in both 2008 and 2012, with Democratic gains in the House and Senate, Republicans did not consider these resouding defeats to be the 'voice of the people,' instead making their entire legislative agenda the prevention of any major reform Obama attempted-- gun, immigration, student loan, welfare. Nevertheless, while the recent midterm had the second lowest voter turnout in history, Republicans are claiming the elections to be a decisive rebuke of Obama's policies-- the will of the people that he is imperiously ignoring by governing where Republicans will not.
