With the exception of two quarters, the percent change from the preceding period in real personal consumption expenditures was higher for goods than services. In January of 2011, the unemployment rate was 9.1. For 2012 it was 8.3 and in 2013, 7.9. During these times of high unemployment, consumers were more inclined to purchase goods than they were services.
