Foreign approval of US leadership increased substantially with the election of President Barack Obama (seen in 2009). However, with the onset of the global economic crisis, kicked off with the US government's decision not to save Lehman Brothers from bankruptcy, European favorability towards America precipitously dropped, and has remained markedly lower than other regions'. Europe is still struggling economically.
