While surviving certain cancers has become nearly assured, cancers of the pancreas, lung, esophagus, and liver have continued to kill at alarming rates. The former three are directly related to smoking, and liver cancer to alcohol. There exists a statistically significant disparity between all races and African Americans, for all cancers, 1975-77, 39%, 1987-89 43%, and 2002-08 60%.
