In 2001, Americans opposed same-sex marriage 57% to 35%. Since, support for same-sex marriage has grown. Today, a majority of Americans support same-sex marriage, compared with 39% who oppose it. Since Pew began tracking public opinion, support hasn't risen above 50% until now. Favorable views steadily increased since 2004, when Massachusetts became the first state to legalize same-sex marriages.
