The number of people incarcerated in private prisons grew by 1,664% from 1990—2009. Meanwhile, the two largest private prison companies, the GEO Group and Corrections Corporation of America together bring in over $3 billion in annual revenue. With no incentive to rehabilitate prisoners, and lots of money for lobbying, we can expect this damaging industry to continue to grow.
