Tipped work, often in restaurants, is one of the lowest paid professions, particularly for people of color. Tipped workers live in poverty at 3X the rate of the U.S. workforce.
Great chart. The federal sub-minimum wage was initially pegged to 50% of the minimum wage limit. However, large chain restaurant lobbyists successfully campaigned for legislation removing this requirement. As a result, tipped workers such as waiters haven't received a wage increase in over 22 years, even while many major restaurant chains have seen revenues increase 50% in this period.
