While hard to believe for many in America, where nearly 50 cities experienced some of their coldest January temperatures on record, the global land temperature average was the fourth highest ever recorded for January. For sea surface temperatures, record warmth was observed in the Pacific Ocean, near Alaska and below South Africa's tip.
