During the Cold War, the United States and the Soviet Union exploded nearly 85% of all nuclear weapons ever detonated. The largest nuclear explosion, by the Soviets in 1961, equated to 57,000 kilotons TNT, over 3000x the strength of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The US in now at the forefront of ensuring additional countries do not develop nuclear capabilities.
