Following the 2007-2008 recession, the US saw a rather sharp decline in its population of unauthorized immigrants. The number peaked at an estimated 12.2 million in 2007, but fell to 11.3 in 2009, breaking a decades-long trend. Now, the number appears to once again be on the rise, reaching an estimated 11.7 in March 2012.
