After bottoming out at 4.7% in 1970, the foreign born population as a percentage of the total U.S. population is rising once again. In 2010, the foreign born population reached 12.9% of the total population, nearly equaling 1920 levels. Foreigners are now emigrating from Latin America and Asia, as opposed to 1960 when immigrants were mostly arriving from Europe.
