Those hoping to win in national elections are increasingly dependent upon an incredibly small number of extremely rich donors. Both parties' leading "super PACs"-- the Democratic Senate Majority PAC and Republican American Crossroads-- have raised tens of millions from a handful of donors. Of the $47 million Senate Majority PAC has raised, $23.1 million came from 16 individuals or corporations they control. For American Crossroads, half of the $24.9 million it has raised came from just 11 donors. Moreover, givea lack of disclosure requirements, such large donations are likely under-recorded.
