The use and presence of the Confederate flag has always been somewhat of a contentious issue within the United States. But what exactly does it mean? Americans, as it turns out are pretty evenly divided over the issue. While a slim plurality of Americans claim that the flag is simply a symbol of southern pride, about a third of Americans believe that the Confederate flag is a thinly veiled symbol for racism.
The results of the poll are interesting. Older generations tend to view it as a symbol for southern pride whereas younger generations tend to see it as a symbol for racism. Unfortunately, the flag is a function of both; just depends on the person.
Totally agree William. It is both. Which raises interesting questions about where we draw lines on tolerance, free speech, hate speech, government use, political correctness, etc.
