Afghanistan, like America, is a multi-ethnic society. Largely dominated by tribalism, the country comprises of dozens of ethnic groups and languages. Historically, Pashtuns have been in power, although Tajiks have periodically gained control. The Hazara are of Mongolian-descent, and are thought to be descendants of Genghis Khan's army. The Hazara face hardship and racism, a theme largely found in Khaled Hosseini's best-selling book, The Kite Runner.
