There are 196 countries on Planet Earth. 92% of them mandate time off each week, 95% of them mandate paid annual leave, and 97% of them mandate paid maternity leave. America is in none of those majorities.
Say what you will about incentives and competitiveness, but maternity leave is just the right thing to do. It should not be up to your employer to decide whether you are free to nurture your newborn or not.
