From 2007 to 2012, America's most politically active corporations spent $5.8 billion, an average of $28.9 million each, on congressional lobbying and campaign contributions to promote policies favorable to their businesses. Often times, this equated to contracts and subsidies-- for those 200 companies, $4.4 trillion, or $22.2 BILLION each. This represents two-thirds of the $6.4 trillion collected in individual taxes. A study found that politicians are overwhelmingly more responsive to businesses and the economic elite, with the preferences of the average American having no actual effect.
It is a massive injustice to the American people that legal formalists on the Supreme Court have squarely linked capital with free speech in a time when economic inequality in the United States is again receiving increased attention. While lobbying will likely remain unaffected, tackling Citizens United will be a step in the right direction.
