Oil spills in U.S. water have decreased from 8,354 spills in 2000 to 3,492 in 2009. However, spill volume has seen a less consistent trend, with 2,841,817 gallons of oil spilled in 2006, twice as much oil than was spilled in 2000 despite half the spills. Volume would rise in 2010 with the BP spill. (Excludes spills from Hurricanes Katrina&Rita)
