Over 30 states have enacted laws curbing citizens' ability to vote since 2011, shortly before the start of the 2012 presidential campaign. These include photo ID requirements, proof of citizenship, and voter registration/early voting limitations. Several Republican leaders have affirmed the purpose of these laws is not voter fraud. In 2010, 5 states had such laws; 10 did by 2011.
