The public thinks immigration is over twice the actual level. The average guess is that 24% of the population was born abroad, whereas the actual figure is 11%. The larger overestimates were in Italy with 23 percentage points of difference and in the US with 19. This overestimation might give us an idea of why, according to a recent EU-wide survey (TNS), immigration was one of the top three issues of concern in several European countries. In the same way, US immigration concerns increased sharply this year, becoming the third most important problem, according to a Gallup survey.
