Melanoma of the skin is the only cancer, of the seven most common types in the US, whose incidence rate is increasing. Between 1970-2009, incidences for young Americans increased 800% (women) and 400% (men). Exposure to the sun's ultraviolet radiation is attributed to roughly 86% of all melanomas. Every 57 minutes, one American dies of melanoma.
