Annually, an estimated 48 million Americans get sick from contaminated foods. Fewer still are hospitalized and some have died. Cost to the economy is calculated by adding health care and lost wages. Additionally, nearly one-half ($7 billion) of the impact to the US economy is attributed to contaminated meat and poultry.
