Perhaps population distribution has something to do with the prevalence of using Eastern as a point of reference in the U.S. Almost half of the population uses Eastern, followed by Central with a third of the population.
I'm in favor of having New England join the Atlantic time zone. (Effectively year round daylight savings time.) It almost made it onto the ballot this election: ballotpedia.org/Massachusetts…
