If you want to keep your friends, it might be a good idea to not talk about politics. While fervent liberals are most likely to disassociate with someone because of politics, strong conservatives are not far behind.
Those who can't tolerate a civilized discussion/debate on what they believe and why they believe it have issues they need to address.
That may be true, but the sad reality is that many people simply cannot keep their emotions out of their beliefs. Since for many people, their political beliefs form the core of their personal identity, an attack on their political opinions represents an affront to them personally.
