A shocking 80% of white Americans believe that the high rate of incarceration of black Americans is not due to "mostly discrimination." To ignore the effects of centuries of racial hierarchy because of relatively very, very recent - and in many ways inadequate - equality legislation is to miss the scope of current questions on race in the United States.
The author finds it "shocking" that most white Americans don't believe racism is the cause of incarceration among blacks, even though nearly half of all black Americans share that same viewpoint. Way to inject his own personal shame of America into what is supposed to be a data chart, not a commentary.
