Each year, about 11% of carbon emissions comes from deforestation and other land changes. But by putting forests under community control and strengthening indigenous rights, we can dramatically reduce deforestation—and help combat climate change. Brazil, with 44% of its rainforest now legally recognized as community forest, has reduced emissions by 3.2 billion tons of carbon dioxide annually.
