The Family and Medical Leave Act (FLMA) allows a minimum of 12 weeks job-protected leave to qualifying employees who need to care for a new child, family or military member, or their own serious illness. Leave is not required to be paid. Only 9.6% of small-firms, though exempt from the act, meet what the government considers a basic leave benefit.
