This study revealed that compulsive buyers, on average, spend more hours "problem shopping" on "problem shopping" days per respondent when compared with non-compulsive buyers. "Problem shopping" implies impulsive, binge spending in which the buyer will usually purchase unnecessary or impractical items. Compulsive buyers engage in such activity more frequently than others as a means of compensating for emotional distress.
