In 2011, 48 percent of public-school students--relatively 24 million students--qualified for free or reduced-price lunches, signifying the low-income status of their families. Perhaps this status and things such as low literacy rates of the children's family members should be considered when students are assessed through standardized testing, which can often be an unfair 'playing field.'
