As a result of the economic downturn and the subsequent high unemployment rate, Americans everyday, discretionary, spending precipitously declined to average below $80 from 2009-2013. This was a dramatic change from 2008, with several months of averages over $100 on this spending. August's average of $95 is the highest in five years.
