Living in the greater NYC area, I hear every sportscaster talk about how Derek Jeter is one of the, if not THE, greatest Yankee. Ever. I questioned that statement, so I went to one of the most overlooked statistics when it comes to determining MVPs: Wins Above Replacement (WAR, number of wins added to team above what a replacement player would add). When compared to the best Yankees, Jeter cracks the top 4 in only 6 of the first 13 years in pinstripes. Gehrig, Mantle, DiMaggio, and the Great Bambino, based on WAR, make up the Yankee's Mt. Rushmore (0=N/A). Sorry, Jeter. No cigar this time.
