While, overall, Americans are inclined to allow government privacy violations in the interest of preventing terrorism, we do not trust the government for self-regulation. Few Americans believe the government assertion that only metadata, like telephone numbers and email addresses, versus actual content, are being collected, or that the information is only being utilized for anti-terrorism efforts.
