These striking misperceptions in public opinion that most Americans have may be the result of a delayed-reaction to societal shifts. Until recently, majorities of Americans were both pro-choice and opposed to gay marriage. This could further be explained as an exaggerated perception of the opposition, which is typically more outspoken, and therefore more pronounced, than those in support or neutral.
