While military positions, school teachers, and scientists are widely considered to be among the occupations that contribute most to society, they are similarly among the least paying. Meanwhile business executives and lawyers are considered to have the lowest societal benefit. Further unsettling, is the lack of regard Americans hold for journalists, who apparently contribute less than artists.
