Since 1979, women have made significant gains in Congress. Women went from making up 3 percent of Congress in 1979 to 18.3 percent in 2013. However, women still have far to go before they can equally and fairly represent half of the nation's population. More women in Congress will mean better representation of women's rights in policies and legislation.
