What are we spending our tax dollars on? Most will readily say the Department of Defense. But did you know that 80% of the budget is actually spent domestically? The three big ticket items of the budget actually include the following: Social Security, Health Insurance (Medicare, Medicaid) Safety Net Programs (Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Snap or food stamps, school meals and more). Thats only 58%! Doesn't leave much for education, transportation infrastructure, medical research, etc.

Unfortunately organization budgets are almost always based on last year's spending as a starting place. Instead we would be much better off if we could start from scratch and say with $X how would we spend if we had no preexisting constraints?

At a macro level, Social Security and Medicare are self-funding. the other programs are not.

Unfortunately, Social Security may attempt to self-fund, but it is not self-sustaining. In addition to consistently being raided for funds, the Social Security system is projected to generate a significant cash flow deficit in the coming years: savvyroo.com/chart-1004603857…
