A study by the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice found that African-Americans suffering from diabetes and on Medicare are nearly three times as likely to undergo leg amputation than other ethnicities. The distribution of data throughout the US is not sufficient to discover all the factors that contribute to the disparity of the amputation rate. An effort to clarify and impart the importance of preventative measures as well as making prescription medications affordable, has been mentioned as a start in addressing this issue.
